Not sure if those variety shows Elvis had done on network TV back in the 50s are in PD or not, maybe the one he did with the Dorsey Brothers ( Stage Show ), I think that could be in public domain.

Now that 1956 appearance of Elvis Presley on Memphis' WHBQ-TV 13 on the Wink Martindale show..that is in public domain since pretty much anything that had aired on local TV in the 50s is either in public domain and/or the local stations themselves couldn't care less if a 3rd party had uploaded that clip or not.

However, interesting and quite odd..for some reason many local TV stations get very very touchy when any of their product from 1970 onward...gets uploaded on sites like You Tube like their newscasts for example..but stuff from the 50s and 60s..for some reason they don't care. Go figure !!!

Thanks for the reply, I'm curious, does the "Wink Martindale show" footage still exist? It'd be pretty cool if it did. I would love to see more TV clips featuring popular music artists to be uploaded, in fact I uploaded a few myself (such as "The Edsel Show" and "Coke Time").

The WHBQ-TV/Wink Martindale show with Elvis DOES EXIST !! However the thing was, Elvis doesn't sing on the show however he does promote an upcoming concert that he will be doing in Memphis, then again in some of my Elvis trvia books I seem to recall reading that Elvis did sing on Wink's show afterall but I didn't see that part.

Wasn't the old Lousiana Hayrid on TV or was it just a radio thing? If it was on TV, chances are Elvis was on TV for that too.

I know Elvis did the Old Virginia Barn Dance back in 1955 on Richmond, VA's then WXEX-TV channel 8, However in 1969 a fire destroyed WXEX's offices and studios including their movie library so I would imagine any films that WXEX ( today the calls are WRIC-TV ) had of Elvis was lost in that fire.

The Wink Martindale show was just a promotional interview. There was no song performance.

One Louisiana Hayride Show was televised. Unlike the radio broadcasts which have been commercially available for years the scopes of the TV show have never been released. Some people have suggested that it's lost but others say it survives and is just held up in legal hassles like the short film Elvis appeared in "The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc Jockey"

Elvis was on the Milton Berle show on 3rd April 1956 performing Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel, and 5th June 1956, performing Hound Dog and I want you, I need you, I love you. I don't have the clips but someone on an Elvis forum might. There were some other TV appearances prior to the Ed Sullivan show including 6 consequtive performances on "The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show" from 28th January 1956, each of two songs. As I'm not an obsessive Elvis type I don't know if they still exist. Good luck.

(I did have an Elvis impersonator at my wedding. He wore the jumpsuit and did a Vegas show set with the addition of "Loving You" for our first dance)

Thanks for the info. I'm also curious if appearances by other early rock artists are PD, I did upload a few excerpts a while ago but they were pretty poor quality (damn you Payless Entertainment).

I have some clips from The Steve Allen Show and most of the Dorsey Brothers clips. These shows are PD but I don't know about taking the song performances out of context. I don't have the complete shows just the clips.

Would putting a title card on the clip stating where they are from cover you for uploading? Like referencing the original (I'm no lawyer but that works in my country under the variable 'fair use' ruling)?
